Introductory Fabric Dyeing Class

About the Class

The class starts with an introduction to Procion dyes and a little colour theory as it applies to them.  We will then ice dye some fabric.  In the afternoon we will bin-dye 4 m of fabric in an ice cream container.  As well as being fun it can highlight several issues which arise when dyeing.  We will then do an exercise in  low immersion dyeing and colour mixing.  The class members will each end the class with 7m of fabric.  At the end of the day the ice-dyeing has its first wash so we can see the results and learn about the washing out process.

All techniques use multiple dyes so that a range of pure and merged colours are produced.

Ice-dyeing uses 2 metres of fabric of various sizes, folded into interesting shapes, with a layer of ice and dye-powder placed on top. As the ice melts (with help if necessary) the dye powder is carried onto the fabric.

Bin-Dyeing uses 4 metres of fabric cut into various lengths. These are folded or scrunched into an ice-cream container in 4 layers with dye placed between the layers. As the colours meet and merge interesting shapes and colours are created.

Low-immersion dyeing and colour-mixing exercise uses 1 metre of fabric.

Low Immersion Fabric Dyeing Class

About the Class

This class the Low Immersion process to produce hand-dyed fabric using three techniques.

Graduated Set: Create a 5-step graduation of one colour (5 pieces of fabric in the same colour but in reducing intensity). Learn one of the common methods for the measured proportions of dye to get predictable results.

Two-Colour Fabric: Uses two colours but the second is added after the first has started to take hold meaning that the two colours merge in some areas but are separate in others.

Colour Family: Create bold unique fabric using three primary colours plus brown or black to make a colour family. The inter-action between the colours and the darks produce exciting results.
